Agricultural Worker's Tools

Cypriot society has traditionally been dominated by farming, with Cypriot agricultural workers outnumbering all other professions. According to the 1931 official census figures, roughly 75% of the entire population lived in rural areas, with 55% of the population working the earth.

  • Narrow ‘Tsappa’ (Hoe): Used for the hoeing of trees, potatoes, and for other agricultural work.
  • Wide ‘Tsappa’ (Hoe): Used for the opening of furrows during the planting of potatoes.
  • Double ‘Tsappa’ (Hoe): Used primarily by men to dig reservoirs around trees for watering, and for the hoeing of the fields and meadows.
  • ’Kounia’: Tool used for the cutting of very thick branches
  • ‘Kladeutiri’ (Pruning tool): Used for pruning and working the vineyards.
  • ‘Drepani' (Sickle): Used for harvesting.
  • Clippers: Used by shepherds for the shearing of sheep.
